Stains
Stains,
like Paint have some of the same basic components. Pigments, Solvents and Binders. And like paints they can either be water
or oil based.
With stains, the pigment or dye, along with the solvents, are the most important components unlike paints where
the binders are the primary need.
Stains that offer more solvents and less binders will penetrate farther, where as stains that have more binders than solvents will have less penetration creating more of a film on the surface.
There
are other marketing applications, but we will only be dealing with the ones that affect the surfaces found in homes and offices. And
for our purposes, they are marketed by their applications separating them in to three categories
Ø Interior
Ø Exterior
Ø Decks
After that, they can further be separated in to other categories with many other variations
Ø Pigmented
Ø Dyed
Ø Gel
Ø Oil
Ø Water
Each type offers different attributes and applications.
Depending on; if we want to highlight the grain
enhancing the effect, provide richer color, penetrate further, utilize a longer working time, or dry quicker, make it a one step process(clear
coat included) or if desired change the level of transparency. (Natural translucent, semi-transparent, or solid color stains)
The determining factors in the type of stain we choose will depend on, among other things, the hardness of the wood or the affect we are trying to reach and the area we are staining ect…
